Discover Opole for the weekend

Do you dream about Venice? Maybe you would like to experience an adventure in the tropics? Opole is the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of a big city, discover musical inspirations and listen to nature. The Old Town is picturesquely situated along the Odra River on two islands - Pasieka and Bolko. Thanks to its intimacy in Opole, it is close to everywhere. We have prepared an interesting plan for you how to spend your time well.

First day - Friday

Evening reconnaissance (3 hours)

After arriving in Opole and checking into the hotel, it is worth going for an evening walk around the Old Town. The intimate Market Square, surrounded by beautiful stylish tenement houses, is one of the most charming places in the city. You will find here restaurants and cafes that encourage you to relax in the evening. The heart of this place is the Town Hall - modeled on the Florentine Vecchio Palace. The culmination of the evening will be a walk along Opole's Venice stretched over the beautiful Młynówka Canal. Picturesque tenement houses, erected on the foundation of medieval city walls, reflecting in the water surface create a fairy-tale view conducive to love confessions.

Second day - Saturday

Historical places (3 hours)

We start from the best viewpoint of Opole and one of the oldest buildings of defensive architecture in Poland, i.e. the Piast Tower. An interactive exhibition in the middle of the tower will take you back to the Middle Ages. Heading towards the Market Square and St. Adalbert street, you will reach the Museum of Opole Silesia, where there is a model of Opole from the mid-18th century and a collection of unusual excavations from an ancient settlement in the Opole district of Ostrówek.

Right next to the museum, we climb beautifully restored stairs leading to the oldest Roman Catholic temple in Opole - the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Adalbert. From the stairs there is a beautiful view of the entire downtown. The main buildings of the University of Opole are located here - Collegium Maius and Collegium Minus, this place is called the University Hill. According to the city legend, it was here that the bishop of Prague, the future saint - Wojciech, patron of our city, converted to the Christian faith, baptized and taught at the end of the 10th century. Currently, there is a St. Adalbert Well with an openwork dome over a stone lining.

In the eastern part of the hill there is the Artists' Square. In a small, beautifully arranged corner of the city, several contemporary sculptures by artists associated with Opole have been placed. Apart from Osiecka, Niemen and Grechuta - the great stars of Opole festivals - there is also a monument to the poet, Jonasz Kofta, or Jerzy Grotowski, a theater reformer who created in Opole. It is undoubtedly one of the most photographed places in the city.

Musical attractions (2.5 hours)

Now it's time for entertainment! If you want to find out at what rhythm the Capital of Polish Song plays, start your tour from the legendary Millennium Amphitheater, where the National Festival of Polish Song (KFPP) has been held since 1963. This iconic scene has created dozens of artists and hundreds of hits. You will enter the amphitheater free of charge. Another attraction is the Polish Song Museum. It is located inside the amphitheater. The modern and fully multimedia exhibition outlines the history of Polish songs from the 1920s to the present day. You will experience an exciting journey into the depths of Polish music, record your song, and virtually try on the costumes of the stars.

Heading towards the center we recommend a walk by the Castle Pond. The whole fountain plays to the rhythm of Polish hits, not only with water jets, but also with the richness of colors. It is worth sitting on a bench and watch this spectacle. But it is not everything! Near the pond, on the Opole Market Square, you can admire the Avenue of the Stars of Polish Song, which already has over 60 of them. Czesław Niemen, Maryla Rodowicz, Edyta Górniak, Edyta Geppert, Ewa Demarczyk, Kora, Kayah, Wojciech Młynarski and Irena Santor.

Third day - Sunday

Rest in the bosom of nature - Zoological Garden (4 hours)

Heading from the center to the Zoological Garden, we pass a very charming district - Pasieka Island, which leads to the Nadodrzański Park. It is a perfect place for those who like to run, walk, rollerblade or practice yoga in their free time. In the summer season, a cruise ship offering cruises on the Oder is moored on the boulevard along the Oder.

Crossing the bridge named after Irena Sendler, we reach Bolko Island, a beloved place of the inhabitants of Opole. Greenery, paths and alleys invite for long walks. Undoubtedly, the biggest attraction of the island is the Opole Zoological Garden, i.e. the fauna and flora of the whole world. It is a green land of peace with over 3,800 animals from all over the world. One of the garden's newest investments is the Land of Biodiversity - an exotic greenhouse with an aviary for birds, thanks to which you will feel like a traveler in a tropical jungle. Visitors, especially the youngest, can visit the mini zoo and pet the animals. There are also playgrounds, picnic areas and food outlets. The Opole Zoo is a place where you can spend many hours without getting bored!

How to get to Opole?

The historic railway station is located in the very center of the city. Thanks to that most tourist attractions are close and you can reach them by public transport or on foot. Opole is very well connected with other cities in Poland thanks to the proximity of the A4 motorway. When driving a car, remember about the paid parking zone in the weekly hours. 8.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. You can download a "zero" ticket, which entitles you to a free stop for 15 minutes.
